I grew up as a competitive swimmer and competed up until the end of my University. I have always loved feeling athletic and after I stopped swimming I have been trying different sports and training modalities! I like to think of myself as a jack of all trades when it comes to anything athletic! My most recent ventures have been in Triathlon, open water swimming, CrossFit and since starting at The Barbell Base, Aussie Rules Football (still not sure what the rules are!).
I would say the one thing that led me to the gym and weight training was a lack of confidence in my physique. I knew I was athletic but I was always a skinny guy and it played on my confidence through my teen years and early 20s. I started lifting weights and making an effort with my nutrition around age 22 and it was a game-changer! I felt and was stronger than I'd ever been, I noticed physical changes and started to get told by other people that I was looking bigger! I have never chased a ripped physique as you see on Instagram or in magazines but I have always looked to be athletic and feel confident in my body and its abilities to not be held back by any physical challenges I want to attempt.
My passion and motivation as a coach are to help as many people as I can feel more confident in their bodies and their bodies' ability to do challenging things. In our current world of social media, everyone is subjected to "perfect" looking physiques that cause us to live in a world of comparison. My focus is to get people to stop chasing a 'look' and to focus on teaching people to move well, lift heavy, feel confident in their skin, and not feel restricted in life by trying to look a certain way. If you are feeling strong, confident, and feel the freedom to enjoy a few beers and a burger then you are winning!
